About  Ayushman Bharat

Ayushman Bharat, also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is a national health protection scheme launched in India in September 2018. The aim of the scheme is to provide free medical care to economically disadvantaged families in the country.

Under Ayushman Bharat, eligible families are provided with a health insurance cover of up to INR 5 lakh (approximately $6,700) per family per year. The scheme covers both primary and secondary healthcare, including hospitalization, surgeries, and other medical treatments.

To be eligible for Ayushman Bharat, families must be identified as socio-economically deprived based on the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011. Families with at least one of the following criteria are eligible:

  • Families without a male member aged between 16 and 59

  • Families with a female member aged 18 or older and no adult male member

  • Families with a disabled member and no able-bodied adult member

  • Families with no adult member between the ages of 16 and 59

The scheme is implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) and is funded by the central government. The scheme has a network of over 23,000 hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country, including public and private hospitals.

Ayushman Bharat is considered one of the largest publicly funded health insurance schemes in the world, covering more than 100 million families or approximately 500 million individuals. The scheme has significantly improved access to healthcare for economically disadvantaged families in India.
