About Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) is a health insurance scheme launched by the Indian government in 2008 to provide health insurance coverage to unorganized sector workers and their families living below the poverty line. The scheme aims to improve access to healthcare services and provide financial protection to vulnerable families.

Under RSBY, eligible beneficiaries receive a biometric-enabled smart card that can be used to access healthcare services at empaneled public and private hospitals across the country. The scheme provides coverage for hospitalization expenses, including pre- and post-hospitalization expenses, up to Rs. 30,000 per annum per family.

RSBY is implemented by state governments, and beneficiaries are identified using the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data. The scheme covers around 4.8 crore families or approximately 24 crore individuals across the country.

The scheme is considered an important step towards providing health insurance coverage to vulnerable populations in India, especially those who work in the unorganized sector and do not have access to formal social security benefits. The scheme has also helped to improve healthcare access and affordability for beneficiaries, leading to improved health outcomes.
