Suspects in Bondi Beach Mass Shooting Named — ‘Real-Life Hero’ Bystander Identified
SYDNEY — Police and media have named the suspects in the devastating mass shooting at Bondi Beach that killed 15 people and wounded dozens more during a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday evening. Authorities also highlighted the extraordinary actions of a civilian bystander whose bravery is being credited with saving lives.
Suspects Identified
Officials have confirmed that the gunmen were a father-and-son duo, identified by police as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, both from Sydney’s western suburbs. Videos from the scene showed two men dressed in black opening fire on crowds gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, in what has been called an antisemitic terrorist attack.
One of the shooters, Sajid Akram, was killed at the scene by responding officers, while his son Naveed was shot and taken into custody in critical condition. Police later raided a home linked to the pair and conducted further searches as part of an ongoing investigation.
Authorities have noted that Sajid Akram held a firearms licence and owned multiple legally registered weapons, some of which were used in the attack. The attack remains under investigation, including whether additional accomplices played a role.
Attack and Casualties
The shooting occurred on the iconic Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, as crowds were gathered for an outdoor Jewish festival on the first evening of Hanukkah. Police confirmed 15 people were killed and dozens were wounded, including children, with victims ranging in age from young children to older adults.
Emergency responders treated scores of people at nearby hospitals as stunned visitors and residents fled the scene amid chaos. The attack has prompted shock and condemnation both in Australia and internationally.
Hero Bystander Identified
Amid the tragedy, footage that went viral on social media showed a civilian confronting one of the shooters. The man, named by Australian media as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner and father of two, ran towards one of the gunmen, tackled him and wrestled his rifle away, potentially preventing further deaths.
Al Ahmed sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and hand during the confrontation and was taken to hospital for surgery. Relatives and community members have praised him as a ‘real-life hero’, saying his decisive actions helped save lives while endangering his own.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns hailed the bystander’s actions as “the most unbelievable scene” and said there were likely many people alive today because of his courage. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also commended those who ran toward danger to help others.
National Response
The deadly shooting, the worst in Australia in almost three decades, has reignited debates about gun laws and counter-terrorism measures. Australian leaders have vowed to review firearm regulations and work to prevent extremist violence, with political and community leaders calling for unity in the face of hate.
