Once one of President Donald Trump’s biggest supporters—and even a key financial donor in the 2024 election—Musk’s relationship with the former president has deteriorated in recent months.

The fallout stems from Trump’s push for a massive domestic spending plan, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill, which critics claim will add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over a decade. Musk, who previously headed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Trump’s administration, fiercely opposed the bill and accused Republican lawmakers of betraying their promises to reduce federal spending.

A New Political Movement: “To Give You Back Your Freedom”

On July 6, 2025, Musk announced the launch of the America Party, describing it as a direct response to what he believes is the erosion of democratic choice in the United States.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk declared on X.

The announcement came just a day after Musk conducted a viral poll on Independence Day, asking his followers if they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The poll drew over 1.2 million responses, with a clear 2-to-1 majority in favor of a new political force.

The America Party: Strategy in Motion

While still in its infancy, the America Party appears to have a clear and calculated strategy. Musk shared that his initial plan is to target a select few House and Senate seats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he posted.

The goal, Musk suggests, is not to immediately upend the entire political system, but to become the deciding vote on critical legislation and hold lawmakers accountable for actions that contribute to national debt and inefficiency.

A Political Feud in the Making

The growing tension between Musk and Trump has become increasingly public. After Musk criticized the spending bill, Trump reportedly threatened to deport the tech billionaire and cut federal funding to his companies.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump told reporters when asked about Musk’s future in the country, despite Musk being a U.S. citizen since 2002.

A Modern Ross Perot?

Observers have noted the potential risks of Musk’s new party splitting the conservative vote—a phenomenon that helped cost George H.W. Bush re-election in 1992 after Ross Perot’s independent run.

Still, Musk remains undeterred, sharing memes such as a two-headed snake labeled “End the Uniparty”, underscoring his belief that the Democratic and Republican parties serve the same entrenched interests.
