Rising Tensions: Iran Seeks Moscow's Support After U.S. Strikes Nuclear Sites

U.S. Strikes Ignite Global Alarm

Late Saturday night, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a targeted military operation against Iranian nuclear infrastructure, claiming the objective was to neutralize Tehran’s alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons. The airstrikes, described by U.S. officials as a "necessary intervention," were the latest in a nine-day Israeli-led aerial campaign across Iran.

Iran condemned the strikes as a grave violation of international law and a dangerous crossing of "red lines." Foreign Minister Araghchi, speaking at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Istanbul, declared that Iran would invoke its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. “We have to respond,” he said emphatically.

Moscow Meeting: Iran Looks to Russia for Strategic Support

In a clear sign of shifting alliances and power recalibration, Araghchi confirmed he would travel to Moscow for emergency consultations with President Putin. “Russia is a friend of Iran. We always consult with each other,” he said, adding that the meeting would take place Monday morning.

Russia, one of Iran’s key allies on the global stage, has long supported Tehran in multilateral forums and has opposed unilateral Western military actions. Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, sharply criticized the U.S. strike, calling it “a new war for the United States.”

Medvedev's Warning: The Threat of Nuclear Escalation

In a widely shared post on Telegram, Medvedev went further, accusing the U.S. of political recklessness. “Trump, who came in as a peacemaker president, has started a new war for the U.S.,” he wrote.

In a controversial and alarming claim, Medvedev asserted that “a number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads,” although he did not specify which nations. He also stated that Iran’s nuclear infrastructure had sustained minimal damage, suggesting that enrichment and potential weapons development would continue unimpeded.

Diplomatic Breakdown: Iran Rejects Talks with U.S.

Araghchi emphasized that Iran was engaged in diplomatic negotiations with both the U.S. and European nations when the strikes occurred. “We were in the middle of diplomacy when Israelis blew it up. The Americans have now destroyed it again,” he stated.

He ruled out returning to negotiations under the current U.S. administration, citing betrayal of diplomacy. “They have proved they are not men of diplomacy. They only understand the language of threat and force,” said Araghchi.

Regional Fallout and Global Implications

The impact of the U.S. strikes extends beyond Iran. Medvedev warned that Israeli civilians now live under the constant threat of retaliatory attacks, and suggested that the situation could spiral into a ground war. He also claimed that Iran's political regime had emerged politically stronger, with national unity forming around its leadership in the face of foreign aggression.

Meanwhile, global oil prices have spiked, financial markets are reacting nervously, and international bodies are scrambling to prevent further escalation.
