India and Russian Oil Purchases

Navarro accused India of exploiting discounted Russian oil imports following the Ukraine war. He argued that before the invasion, India’s purchases from Moscow were negligible, but have surged since the G7 nations imposed a price cap on Russian crude. According to him, this shift allowed Indian refiners to profit while American taxpayers carried the financial burden of the conflict. However, US officials have previously acknowledged that India’s discounted purchases were a deliberate feature of the global mechanism to keep supplies flowing while limiting Moscow’s revenue.

US Trade Deals and India’s Position

Highlighting recent US trade partnerships with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia, Navarro claimed that these countries are now cooperating more closely with the United States. He contrasted India’s position, cautioning that aligning too closely with Russia and China could damage India’s long-term interests. “I think India must come around at some point. And if it doesn’t, it’s lying down with Russia and China, and that won’t end well for India,” he said.

Comments on China and Europe

Navarro also addressed China’s role as the largest buyer of Russian oil, noting the difficulty of balancing sanctions with economic realities. He urged India and Europe to halt Russian crude imports, insisting that this would advance the prospects of peace. On China, Navarro emphasized ongoing US tariffs exceeding 50 percent and framed them as necessary to protect American industries.

Attack on BRICS

The White House adviser was particularly scathing about the BRICS alliance, labeling member states as “vampires” draining American wealth through unfair trade practices. He argued that none of these economies could sustain themselves without access to the US market. Questioning the bloc’s unity, Navarro claimed, “I don’t see how the BRICS stays together since historically they all hate each other and kill each other.”

He further criticized Russia’s relationship with China, pointing to disputes over territories like Vladivostok and alleged Chinese migration into Siberia. Navarro also referenced India’s long-standing tensions with China, Brazil’s economic difficulties, and Pakistan’s nuclear program, suggesting internal contradictions would eventually undermine BRICS.

Fact-Check and Online Controversy

Navarro’s statements have sparked widespread criticism, especially over his portrayal of India’s energy strategy. He previously faced repeated fact-checks on X (formerly Twitter) regarding his claims. In response, Navarro accused Indian users of manipulating polls he had posted on the platform. He alleged foreign interference in American discourse, but his comments drew further scrutiny as users challenged the accuracy of his assertions.

India’s Stance

From India, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented the country at the recent BRICS virtual summit hosted by Brazil. India has consistently defended its right to secure affordable energy for its citizens, while also engaging in dialogue with global partners on energy security and geopolitical stability.
